Public opinion on the sale of fireworks

With recent Guy Fawkes Night celebrations, the controversy on the sale of fireworks is being debated in the public again.

We asked a representative sample of 500 New Zealanders whether they support or oppose the sale of fireworks to the general public.

A slim majority of respondents opposed the sale of fireworks to the general public.

  • 52% opposed the sale of fireworks to the general public.
  • 27% of respondents supported the sale of fireworks to the general public.
  • 21% didn’t have an opinion either way.

There were clear differences across age groups. Older respondents (60 plus) were much more likely to oppose the sale (66%) compared to younger respondents (34%).

There was slightly more support from those in urban areas (Auckland, Wellington and Canterbury) than those in provincial areas (32% and 20% respectively)

Methodology:

  • This online survey was conducted from 12th to 17th November 2018.
